On a daily basis we meet all sorts of different people from all walks of life and we’re asked a huge variety of different questions about anything motor sports related and even general motoring questions.  We often get asked if Competition Clutch Inc.’s Clutches are worth the investment.

They specialise in “producing sport compact assemblies from street driven to full race applications and their products are used in some of the fastest sport compact race cars in the country, including a number of the most recognized industry icon vehicles”.
This all sounds wonderful and we’ve loved singing CCI’s praises, but it doesn’t actually help you to make the decision about what to buy. With that in mind, we’ve created a short outline of Competition Clutch Inc.’s Clutches to help you decide where to put your hard-earned cash. 

The Stage 2 - Street Series 2100 Clutch kit provides an 80% increase in torque capacity and is perfect for “aggressive street use and moderate track use” and because the Brass Plus material, with its alloy backing, is matched to a performance pressure plate, it will provide smooth engagement and extended life. However, they do stipulate that the Stage 2- Street Series ideally needs a 500-mile break-in and a minimum 300-mile break-in period with this set-up.

The 2100 Series kit includes a performance pressure plate, a high torque sprung disc with anti-burst steel backed Brass Plus facings, all applicable bearings and the appropriate alignment tool.

The Stage 3 – Street/Strip Series 2600 Clutch Kit is produced from a segmented Ceramic material with a performance pressure plate. It provides “the ultimate in street and strip combinations” and delivers up to a 150% increase in torque capacity.  A 300-mile break-in period is also recommended with this set-up.

The 2600 Series kit includes a performance pressure plate, a high torque sprung disc with segmented Ceramic facings,, all applicable bearings and the appropriate alignment tool.

Stage 4 Sprung – Strip Series 1620 Clutch Kit, on the other hand, delivers a 250% increase in torque capacity due to the high-performance pressure plate. It is available with a six-puck sprung plate and is excellent at “penetrating engagement with higher horsepower applications”. Again, a 300-mile break-in is recommended with this set-up.

The 1620 Series kit includes a performance pressure plate, a 6-puck torque sprung disc with Ceramic buttons, all applicable bearings and the appropriate alignment tool.

Then there’s the MPC Clutch Kit, giving a significant increase in “horsepower holding capacity with excellent drivability characteristics”, the twin disc construction is perfect for ensuring that you get maximum drivability. What’s more, the new clutch kit delivers model sport driving as well as daily driving clutch use.

All of the MPC Clutch Kits are provided with an alignment tool, pilot bushing and throw-out bearing.

There is the Super Single, which was developed for cars that are not quite ready for a twin but require something that delivers a little more than the conventional Stage 4. CCI say that “The Super Single mirrors a twin disc in the fact that they both are a 7.25″ set up and have 4140 forged steel flywheel”.  The Super Single is designed for road race use only and is not recommended for drag racing. The Super Single is an essential purchase for all-motor/nitrous cars running up to 350whp.

CCI’s Flywheels offer the most versatility as they works with all performance and stock clutch assemblies. They are constructed out of 4140 forged steel and are a one-piece design. CCI state that “this helps significantly in reducing the chances of ring gear separation and friction surface warpage”. CCI have two types of Flywheel available:

Competition-Clutch

The lightweight steel flywheel, which is recommended for naturally aspirated and/or street driven applications. This flywheel preserves low-end torque and driveability. Well-suited for Gravity, Stage 1 and Stage 2 clutch applications.

Whereas the ultra-lightweight steel flywheel is recommended for forced induction and/or track and rally racing applications. This flywheel is produced with less material to assist in quicker revving capabilities and is well-suited for Stage 3 and upwards clutch applications.
