Hardrace Bump Steer
Hardrace bump steer products help the front wheels of a vehicle to maintain a particular direction when the front wheels of a car move up and down. No bump steer is crucial for the car wheels to have minimal bump when making turns. The ingenuity of Hardrace’s product design and testing team ensures that all the elements of construction of front end components are produced with precise craftsmanship and well-researched technical know expertise.
Bump steer is generally affected by tie-rod angle, camber, and steering-arm pivot. Hardrace bump steers come with the proper angle fitting because for example with tie-rods - if the tie rod is too short, it will have a more severe arc. Undesirable steering is generally caused by bumps in the track interacting with improper length or angle of your suspension and steering linkages.
Subsequently, if the length is more than appropriate, it can cause a toe-in condition. Camber is essentially the amount of lean-in or out the wheel has in relation to the surface. Steering-arm pivot pertains to the spindle rotating around the upper and lower ball joints. By lowering a vehicle you lower its roll centre which raises the centre of gravity. Contrary to popular opinion lowering a car actually increases body roll, not decreases. The correct way to improve a cars handling when you lower the vehicle is to reduce the relative difference of the location of the roll centre and centre of gravity.
Hardrace takes into account how car manufactures design vehicles since during the design process, if the centerline of the outer tie rod lines up with the centerline of the lower ball joint, and the inter tie rod lines up with the lower pivot point, this makes the length and angle of the tie rod and suspension the same which then results in zero bump. Achieving zero bump means that the front end should be designed properly. The tie rod must travel on the same arc as the suspension when the car goes through travel.
Lowering a car alters the handling characteristics due to geometrical changes. The challenges are excessive body roll and introducing bump steer which occurs when the track rods sit at an angle as they run from the steering rack to the track rod end. The angle leads to the arms shortening as the wheel travels upwards through its travel leading to the arms pulling the back of the wheel in towards the vehicle which makes a vehicle change direction. Should both wheels travel upwards simultaneously, then the bump steer cancels itself out.
