Please feel free to get in touch with any and all questions!
We Run Federal 595RSR on our Race car - Project Moff
When your job requires you spend hours of each day trawling through Facebook and Forum's you start to recognise commonly asked questions, one of the most frequent is tyre choice. What tyres should I buy for track use and work well on the road too ? Here we talk through Federal tyres and try to answer some of the technical questions too based on our experience.
Federal 595 are often suggested. As it seems Federal hasn't got much information online I'm composing this blog post to hopefully help you make a choice and will briefly explain enticing statements such as “HA oil-free technology” and “M.P.O”
Where can I buy Federal 595RS-R?
TMS Motorsport are a UK seller of Federal tyres and will be happy to supply you with either the 595 or 595RS-R tyre models.
Are Federal 595RS-R good track day tyres?
So on occasion we’re asked “Are Federal 595 tyres any good?” and in our opinion yes, they cannot be beaten for price vs performance. We use 595RS-R’s on the TMS Motorsport R33 Nissan Skyline GTST track car, with over 650hp to the rear wheels we need all the grip available to us! The Federal 595 RS-R is an ultra high performance E marked tyre suitable for use on the track or on the street. Designed for drivers who require flat out performance the 595 RS-R gives high levels of grip without compromising everyday driving comforts. Combining an aggressive tread pattern with a special silica compound the 595 RS-R provides higher adhesion levels and more resistance to aquaplaning to give drivers the best control for cornering, braking and accelerating.
A perfect tyre for track day use.
1. Evenly dispersed block stiffness - same level of stiffness in the center and the shoulder for stronger grip and traction, prevents irregular wear.
2. Uni-Directional V-shaped main groove enhances streamline form and also improves aquaplaning ability at high speeds.
3. Wide angle grooves increase block stiffness, further enhancing tire's grip and traction.
4. Engraved pattern name along the groove creates an exquisite product image.
5. Sub-grooves on the shoulder disperse block stiffness, improving ride comfort, grip and traction.
6. Complete block stiffness provides excellent lateral stability in cornering.
7. The 595RS-R is beefed up by reinforced steel on the sidewall to promote the sharpest high speed cornering and fastest lap improvement.
What tyres compare to Federal 595RS-R?
Hankook Ventus RS3, Dunlop Direzza Sport Z1, Yokohama AD08’s, Toyo T1R and R888’s are comparable when it comes to performance but the Federals 595RS-R’s cannot be beaten for price point.
What other tyres do Federal make?
Federal don’t just produce the 595RS-R and I’ll be covering a few of their other models below.
What sizes can I buy Federal 595’s in?
With so many different car and wheel combinations available Federal have to produce a large variation in tyre sizes, anywhere from a 195/50/15 all the way up to a massive 285/30/18 with most sizes available in between. I've added a tyre table to the bottom of this post.
What happened to the 595 RS-S or SS?
Most people know of the Federal SS595 or 595 RS-S as the go-to fast road/track tyre and I’ve been asked a few times as to whether or not we can still get hold of them. In short the answer is yes! The long answer however is they have been rebranded to simply just the “595”. The reason behind this rebranding was to simplify the range but fear not, they’re still the same great tyres you’re used to.
What is HA oil-free technology?
In 2009 Federal announced it would be replacing the high-aromatic oils used in their tyre production. Also known as distillate aromatic extract oils and considered a hazardous substance to both the environment and human life. The reasoning behind this change was to do with the companies core value and philosophy as an eco friendly tyre manufacturer and also to meet EU REACH regulations.
M.P.O
Federals M.P.O technology stands for Magnified Performance Optimisation and is to ensure the tyres performance doesn’t drop off over time. What this means in layman terms is the performance remains consistent as the tyre tread depth is worn down and is even unvarying over multiple heat cycles. For the end user (you) this means tyres last longer.
Main tyre choices available from Federal
595
Formally the ss595, Federals introduction to performance tyres. These tyres are more suited to fast road but will still hold their own on the occasional track day. They can be a bit noisy due to V shaped tread for resistance to aquaplaning but the performance trade off is worth it.
595 RS-R - OUR RECOMMENDATION
If you’re looking for a budget track day tyre Federal have you covered with the 595 RS-R. They were first released in 2007 and used as the official tyre for X Challenge Australia on Lotus cars. With a treadwear rating of 140AA A they are nice and soft and don’t require much heat to get going and should still outlast Toyo R888’s 140AA A super soft compound.
To give an Idea, Toyo 888's are 100 on the UTQC rating, A048 from Yokohama are 60. So the Federal is only a little harder than leading brands. We find they have fantastic water learing abilities and work well in wet conditions.
We also think they are a great looking tyres as far as tyres go !

595 RS-RR
Also in the Federal line up is their best track rated tyre, tested at Tsukuba Circuit in Japan. Federal Tyres' 595RS-RR Nabs Prestigious 2017 Red Dot Award. These tyres have a treadwear ratomg of 200AA A so although slightly harder than the RS-R's still provide more grip due to the aggressive inferno shape tread pattern. We sare working on seeing if these are available to bring to the UK.
